What are you going to do when you grow up?

At first sight it seems an innocent and trivial question, where the dreams that we have as children and what we long to be when we are adults are kept. Since we were little we imagined our ideal future, we thought about what we would like to become, full of illusions and hopes… something that we often renounce without realizing.

Rock and roll star, astronauts, doctors, police, veterinarians, firemen, or even professional video game player as I’ve known many people who want it lately. Some children, the ones more used to when asked, respond that as adults they want to be happy.

During those years in our head only free thoughts fit, ideas without barriers that inspire us … and to which the majority ends up renouncing. Then we justified ourselves by saying that they were “dreams of youth” or that life “has brought us to where we are”, since very few people really dare to pursue their dreams.

There is no recipe for many things in life, including happiness. Nobody has been able to give a unique definition of happiness and probably each of us has our own version. True? The English professor André Spicer and author of the book The Wellness Syndrome points out the following: “Measuring happiness is as simple as taking the temperature of the soul or determining the exact color of love,” he says. Bone, something practically impossible.

But that innocent question titled in the article is even more relevant if we talk about business … because most people create their businesses without having really thought about it, about whether growing is the only option. Without knowing where they want to go or what they want to achieve. “Success”, some say … but what is success ?: Have time to live relaxed or be with the family? Earn a lot of money? Fame?

The question is not irrelevant, and your answer should interest us even more, both in our lives and in our businesses. If for example your definition of success is “being rich”, you have to make a series of completely different decisions (at the level of risk, growth strategy or finance) that if “only” (only?) You want to be happy.

If our goal is to grow and be rich, surely we should create a business model where we can sell many units with little margin, intensive in capital, where it is necessary to seek investment, be willing to give up control … and if necessary, even step aside . However, if what we are looking for is to be “happy” while covering our financial needs we should surely self-finance or bootstrapping (English term, which means starting something with little resources), grow at a slower but safer pace, opt for business models of few to many at the same time that we enjoy creating / selling a great product in which we believe.

But in both cases, the first thing is to reflect on what motivates you, for this to remember that you wanted to be an adult, find out how far your ambition comes. And to know it you will have to explore in your motivations, in that “something” that moved you when you were a child … and the most difficult thing, to be consistent with it. And do not make mistakes, your current job or your life is not a perpetual sentence, but temporary circumstances, which depend on your actions and your will … and therefore can be changed.

“If you do not get your dreams, you can achieve many things on your way to get them.” – Randy Pausch

In life, we will constantly encounter many obstacles on our way to success. There will always be impediments that will cross our path, when we want to achieve our dreams. However, most of those obstacles will be there for a reason, just much more important than stopping us. And the real reason why these obstacles appear in our path, is to show us, how willing we are to give of ourselves to achieve what we want.

A good way to get around these obstacles and learn from them is to use creativity.

You should not allow anyone to limit you when it comes to bringing out all your creativity. If you want to paint, do it, if you want to write Write! That you can give free rein to your creativity is one of the best ways to stimulate your mind and to prepare you to think much more openly and with alternatives when solving problems.

It is important to be optimistic, energetic, curious, and fun many times. Normally people who have an attitude with these characteristics, get better things in life.

It seems to be a coincidence that those who precisely do the opposite always complain about how bad they live, and they do not fulfill their dreams as they wish. But once again, it’s not because they’ve gone wrong, so they complain. It’s about complaining and reneging, that they’re doing badly.

Our attitude and disposition towards life determines how we will make our decisions, how we will act and achieve what we want (or not). And much more than an entirely mental issue, it is the way we conceive reality through our eyes that drives us to act in a certain way, and it is this action (with all its possible nuances) that ultimately produces our results.

So it’s really worth thinking about how we are thinking and disposing ourselves towards the world, and how effectively we are taking charge of our lives. So do not complain about “where life has brought you” and take control. And look back to those days when the future was bright and you wanted to be an astronaut … and recover that spirit. Maybe that original idea does not make sense … or maybe it does. In any case it is in your hands.
